RTS Futures Event – Commission My Comedy: How To Get Your Comedy Script Onto Screen

How does a writer get a comedy script from their brain onto a tv screen? How does a producer sell that script to a commissioner? What exactly is a commissioner looking for in a script? And just what is it that a channel controller does, exactly? Guided by Richard Bacon, our extremely talented and beautiful panel attempt to answer these and other questions.

Many comedy scripts are written, very few are commissioned. Writer Sarah Hooper (Shameless) is responsible for one that has made it: Sky1HD’s forthcoming comedy drama, Mount Pleasant. She is joined by her producer Siobhan Bachman (E4’s Beehive), and Sky1HD’s head of comedy Lucy Lumsden and channel controller Stuart Murphy to discuss how Mount Pleasant made the leap.

Siobhan is comedy producer at Tiger Aspect, the company behind Harry and Paul, Grandma’s House and Benidorm. Formerly Controller of Comedy at the BBC, Lucy was in charge of comedy on all four channels. She commissioned, among other things, Outnumbered, Armstong and Miller, Miranda, The Trip, and How Not To Live Your Life. She’s now head of comedy at Sky. The Mighty Boosh, Gavin and Stacey, Pulling and Little Britain are a few of Stuart Murphy’s successes when he headed up BBC3, and comedy is a big priority for him now he’s controller of Sky1HD.
