Returning Officer

The Returning Officer of NaSTA acts as an independent person overseeing the conduct during NaSTA elections, general meetings, award giving and disputes, as well as investigating complaints and issuing sanctions when necessary. The Returning Officer is elected during the AGM.

Haaris is a MComp Computer Science student from Newcastle University, where he has also been involved in leading NUTV. Whilst at the station, he leaded the efforts into building the station from a couple of students into the foundations of a full student TV production studio, efforts which gained won him NUSU’s prize for Outstanding Contribution to Student TV, and the runner up for the University’s prize for Outstanding Contributions to Student Media.

Haaris was appointed Returning Officer of NaSTA in 2018, following his tenure as Deputy Returning Officer and then Secretary the previous year, where he worked with the Returning Officer and Chair in re-authoring the constitution and policy documents as part of the Association’s application to the Charity Commission.
